
Retired Lieutenant General Andrew M. Rohling assumed the duties of Deputy Chair of the NATO Military Committee on 12 February 2024. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry in 1989 after graduating with a degree in engineering from the University of South Florida. His first assignment was as a platoon leader in the 7th Infantry Division at Fort Ord, California, participating in Operation Just Cause in Panama.
He served in the 1st Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment; 1st and 3rd Infantry Divisions in Germany; the 6th Ranger Training Battalion in Florida; and as a Vietnam MIA/POW team commander for Joint Task Force-Full Accounting in Hawaii. After completing studies at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, he served with the Southern European Task Force (Airborne) in Vicenza, Italy, and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
Rohling commanded the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, and served in senior staff positions, including coordination group director and executive officer for Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno. He was Deputy Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division and commander of Advise and Assist Command – Helmand, Afghanistan. From October 2020, he commanded U.S. Army Southern European Task Force–Africa and served as Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Europe and Africa from August 2022 to January 2024.
