Jan Techau (*1972 in Lübeck, Germany) is Director, Europe at the Eurasia Group, covering Germany and European Security from Berlin. Jan served as head of speechwriting in the German Ministry of Defense from 2020 to 2023. He was Director of Carnegie Europe from 2011-2016 and ran the Europe Programs at both the German Marshall Fund of the United States (2018-2020) and at the German Council on Foreign Relations (2006-2010). In 2017, he published his book “Führungsmacht Deutschland” (with Leon Mangasarian), presenting a blueprint for a revised German foreign policy. Jan also served as Research Adviser at the NATO Defense College’s Research Division in Rome (2010-2011) and as director of the Richard Holbrooke Forum at the American Academy in Berlin (2016-2017). Jan holds an M.A. in Political Science from Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel, Germany, and has studied at Penn State and the University of Osnabrück.
