Simon Serfaty

Simon Serfaty is the first holder of the Zbigniew Brzezinski Chair in Global Security and Geostrategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), where he serves as Senior Associate and Director of European Studies. He was director of the CSIS Europe Program for more than a decade and continues to advise the program. Serfaty is also Professor of U.S. Foreign Policy with the Graduate Programs in International Studies at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

From 1972 to 1993, he served as a research professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, directing the Johns Hopkins Center of European Studies in Bologna, Italy (1972–1976), the Washington Center of Foreign Policy Research (1978–1980), and the Johns Hopkins Foreign Policy Institute (1984–1991). He has published extensively on international affairs, including Taking Europe Seriously (1992) and After Reagan: False Starts, Missed Opportunities and New Beginnings (1989), and is the author of Architects of Delusion: Europe, America, and the Transatlantic Partnership.

Serfaty’s expertise spans transatlantic relations, global security, and European political strategy. Over his career, he has shaped academic thought, policy development, and strategic analysis, bridging scholarly research with practical insights for policymakers and international institutions. His work continues to influence debate on U.S.-European relations and global security challenges.
